Some time ago, I presented a thesis where I maintained, accompanied with a thorough breakdown, that the name of Istanbul (also known as Constantinople) does not mean ‘Εις την Πόλιν (To the City)’ as generally given around but instead ‘Land/Place of the (crescent) Moon.’
That comes out of the first component ‘Istan-,’ a Persian loan than means ‘land, place,’ and the second of ‘-bul,’ which is a Semitic loan that used to be the name of a Hebrew month as well as the respective moon.
Recently, I have got acquainted with a history teacher at a relatively central school in London who is of multinational background as a blend of British, Greek and Palestine (his name is British) with a very good knowledge in Semitic languages.
And when I asked him (about that second component), he confirmed to me that ‘bul’ indeed means ‘moon’ (it is a rather obsolete word/name nowadays) and thereby further substantiated my theory. After all, the official etymology always looked ‘lame’ to me (and it’s not the only one).
